Tara National Park

The Sargan Eight

We got to see some mountains this weekend. We drove to Tara National Park in south west Serbia for a weekend and stayed in an "ethno" cottage. Apparently, I'm the fire keeper in this relationship, but it works. I kept the fire going (I'm speaking literally, here, I swear) for two nights in a row, as the wood burning stove was the cottage's only heat source. Glad for my Girl Scout days. The four of us were toasty-cozy in our little living room. We took an exciting and somewhat dangerous train ride in the afternoon. The train rode a figure eight alongside a mountain. For some reason (adventure? daring? just because we could?), we allowed our children to stand with us on the outside of the train on the platform between the cars. Speeding through the dark tunnels I wondered why I was doing this. Only in Eastern Europe. I thought about the precautions the station master took in Rockville, Maryland while slowly riding the gentle, little kiddy train through the woods of the park there. What would he say about my children on the outside of a train on the side of a mountain?
